Disability Pride Month

A graphic for Disability Pride Month featuring a quote in black text on a white background with a pink border. The quote reads: 'Pride isn't about loving my disability. It's about rejecting the notion that I am diminished by it.' Below the quote is the text 'DISABILITY PRIDE MONTH' in bold, with the website 'trippingonair.com' listed at the bottom

I found this quote online a few years ago and it sums up why it’s so important for Disability Pride to exist. The internalised ableism (post on that coming soon) in me wanted to make me believe that disability was something that I could never be proud of, something that I had to minimise and not talk about the realities of being a disabled person in a world built by non-disabled people. Part of the work I was able to do while training to be a counsellor was around being more authentic and getting better at asking for what I need (without immediately apologising!). Then I saw this and it all fell into place.

I am proud of how disabled people keep working to make sure that disabled people are always part of important conversations, and it is my hope that disability pride month can amplify our voices. The most important thing to remember though, is whatever is learned and done during Disability pride month needs to be done throughout the rest of the year too.
